Maple Surprise Cocktail
Cocktails can be done really well and they can be done really poorly. Using maple syrup as a substitute for the corn syrup or cane sugar that is typical in cocktails is a strong starting point for doing a good job. To create a maple-spiced simple syrup follow these directions.
Yield: Maple-spiced simple syrup can be made up to 3 weeks in advance and will make enough for 10 cocktails.
Maple-spiced Simple Syrup Ingredients:
1/2 cup 100% pure Cragged Mountain maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoon anise seed
2 cinnamon sticks
5 whole cloves
1 1/2 ounces local whiskey (such as Bully Boy American)
1/2 ounce mezcal
3/4 ounce maple-spiced syrup
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
Lemon twist, for garnish
Make the maple-spiced simple syrup. In a saucepan, combine maple syrup with spices and 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil and turn off heat. Cover and let stand for at least 30 minutes (or overnight), then strain into a clean container.
Make the cocktail. In a shaker, combine whiskey, mezcal, maple-spiced simple syrup, and lemon juice. Add ice and shake. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with lemon twist.
